Additional information

Marktschorgast is a small market town in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, and this iron piece is classic Kriegsgeld — emergency coinage issued by German municipalities when the Imperial government requisitioned copper and nickel for war production, leaving small change in chronic short supply by 1917. Hundreds of towns and communes struck their own issues that year, most in iron or zinc. Few circulated beyond their issuing locality.
