Additional information

Linz am Rhein issued iron notgeld during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany from roughly 1916 onward, when wartime metal requisitioning stripped copper and nickel from civilian circulation entirely. Iron was the reluctant substitute — cheap, abundant, and thoroughly hated by the public for its tendency to rust in pocket humidity. Most municipal iron issues of this type saw only months of active use before being withdrawn or simply discarded.
