Additional information

Wickingwerke was a chemical and soap manufacturing firm in Lengerich, Westphalia, and like hundreds of German industrial employers during the notgeld period of 1917–1921, it issued its own small-denomination tokens to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued civilian commerce during and immediately after the First World War. Zinc was the material of necessity — copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort years earlier.
