Mechanische Baumwoll-Spinnerei und Weberei Kempten was one of the larger textile operations in the Allgäu region, and like many German industrial firms during the First World War it resorted to issuing its own iron notgeld to pay workers when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation entirely. The Reichsbank's wartime metal requisitions stripped copper and nickel from the monetary system, leaving factories dependent on scrip to make change at canteens and company stores.
Iron was the unglamorous workaround — cheap, abundant, and corroding readily in pocket humidity. Survivors in collectible condition are accordingly scarce.
