Obverse description The municipal arms of Hammerstein occupy the central field, depicting a displayed eagle surmounting a shield charged with a hammer, the whole flanked by spreading oak branches with acorns. The legend STADT is inscribed across the upper field and HAMMERSTEIN along the lower periphery, each separated from the central device by a six-pointed star in the left and right fields respectively. The design reflects the civic heraldic tradition common to German Notgeld issues of the First World War period.
