Landkreis Bielefeld issued this note during the hyperinflation of 1923, when local authorities across Germany were forced to print their own emergency currency — Notgeld — to keep commerce functioning as Reichsmark denominations became worthless faster than the Reichsdruckerei could supply them. The "Gold" designation is the key detail here: rather than denominating the note in inflated paper marks, Bielefeld anchored its value to a gold equivalent, a practical hedge against the daily devaluation that was destroying confidence in any fixed-face currency.
Thomas was a local Bielefeld printer, not a security press, which shows in surviving examples — registration and ink consistency vary across the run.
