Additional information

Saxonia AG was a potash mining operation in Glöthe, a small village in the Prussian province of Saxony. Like many German industrial firms of the late Wilhelmine and early Weimar periods, it issued zinc notgeld tokens for use in company-controlled stores and canteens — a system that effectively kept workers' wages cycling back to the employer. Zinc was the pragmatic choice during wartime and its aftermath, when copper and nickel were diverted to military production.
