Ettenheim, a small Baden town, issued iron notgeld during the acute metal shortages of World War I, when the imperial government had requisitioned copper and nickel for munitions. Iron coinage of this type was inherently prone to corrosion, and survivors in genuinely uncirculated condition are uncommon for that reason alone — not because of limited mintage, but because the material worked against long-term preservation from the moment of striking.
