| Obverse description | Central device depicts the prancing horse of Brunswick in left profile, shown in high relief with forelegs raised and tail extended, set upon a ground line. The horse is the traditional heraldic symbol of the Duchy of Brunswick. The circumferential legend HERZOGTUM BRAUNSCHWEIG arcs around the upper portion of the field, rendered in bold Latin capitals. The entire design is contained within a beaded border running close to the coin's rim. |

| Additional information |
Brunswick issued its own iron notgeld coinage in 1918 as the German imperial government's wartime requisitioning of copper and nickel left municipal and state authorities scrambling to fill the gap in small change. The duchy was one of the few German federal states to strike iron pieces at this denomination rather than relying solely on paper notgeld. Iron coins from this period corrode aggressively in anything but ideal storage conditions, which explains why problem-free survivors are genuinely difficult to source.
