| Obverse description | Central field depicts a fully armored knight standing facing, holding a long spear or lance in his right hand and a heraldic shield bearing the letter 'B' in his left hand; a vanquished dragon appears prostrate at the knight's feet. The circular legend 'STADT BENSHEIM' runs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, with the date '1917' inscribed at the base flanked by small stars. Two distinct die varieties exist: F#34.3a, in which the spear enters the dragon, and F#34.3b, in which the spear reaches only to the knight's foot. |

Bensheim issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917 as wartime metal requisitions stripped German municipalities of their copper and nickel supplies. The Reich had been systematically recalling higher-value coinage metals since 1915, leaving local authorities to fill the small-change vacuum themselves. Zinc was the compromise material — abundant, workable, but corroding readily in circulation, which accounts for the difficulty in finding survivors with clean surfaces.
