Additional information

Bensheim issued this iron notgeld piece in 1917, the same year Germany's wartime metal shortages reached a critical point — nickel and copper had been systematically diverted to military production since 1915, forcing municipalities across the Reich to produce their own emergency coinage in whatever base materials remained available. Iron was the stopgap of necessity, not choice, and the resulting issues corrode readily, making problem-free survivors harder to find than mintage figures alone would suggest.
