Comments

The Bank für Handel und Industrie was a Berlin-based commercial bank, but its Greiz branch issued this note independently during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the months following the armistice. Municipalities, businesses, and local institutions across the country were printing their own Kleingeldersatz at this point — the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough low-denomination coin and paper to meet daily transactional needs.

Hofkunstanstalt Löffler & Co. was a local Greiz printer, which kept production entirely within the town. Notgeld of purely local manufacture like this tends to show more variation in ink registration and paper stock than centrally printed issues.
