Additional information

Fr. Lürssen Schiffswerft was founded in 1875 on the Weser near Bremen and grew into one of Germany's most significant shipyards — later responsible for the E-boats of the Second World War. This iron token is a product of the notgeld emergency, when the wartime metal shortage of 1914–1918 forced private employers, municipalities, and firms across Germany to issue their own substitute coinage for use within their facilities or local communities. Iron was the unsentimental answer to the disappearance of copper and zinc from civilian circulation.
