Obverse description Left-facing bust of Charlemagne (Karl der Große) wearing a medieval crown or helm, set against a large shield occupying most of the field. The bust is rendered in a bold, stylized low-relief typical of German Notgeld coinage. The city name AACHEN appears in incuse or raised lettering along the lower right rim, following the contour of the coin. The composition references Aachen's historical identity as the seat of Charlemagne's empire.
