Grimma's Amtshauptmannschaft — an administrative district in Saxony — issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany after the First World War. Coin metal had been hoarded, melted down, or simply demonetized, and local authorities across the country stepped in with their own Notgeld to keep everyday commerce functional. Grimma was one of hundreds of such issuers, and the notes were understood by everyone involved to be temporary instruments.

At 46 × 34 mm, this is among the smallest Notgeld formats produced — barely larger than a large postage stamp, and handled accordingly.
