Comments

Oberweißbach is a small Thuringian village best known as the birthplace of Friedrich Fröbel, inventor of the kindergarten. This 1921 Notgeld issue was part of the wave of municipal small-change notes that flooded Germany when metal coinage essentially vanished from everyday commerce during the postwar inflation spiral — by mid-1921, even 10 Pfennig in zinc or aluminum was worth hoarding or melting relative to the paper equivalent.

Wiedemannsche Druckerei in nearby Saalfeld handled a substantial volume of Thuringian Notgeld commissions during this period, which accounts for the consistent production quality across regional issues from small municipalities that lacked any independent printing relationships.
