Neumünster's 1920 Notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency money printed across Germany during the hyperinflationary chaos that followed defeat in the First World War. Small denominations like this were a practical response to the chronic shortage of official coin and low-value currency — the Reichsbank simply could not keep up with demand at the local level.

Paper issues from this period survive in wildly uneven numbers. Neumünster was a textile and industrial town with modest political profile, which means its Notgeld attracted less collector speculation at the time than the elaborate artistic series from more prominent cities — a fact that cuts both ways for rarity today.
