Neudorf, a small industrial commune in the Kattowitz district of Upper Silesia, issued this Notgeld during the acute coin shortage of 1917, when wartime metal requisitioning had stripped low-denomination coinage almost entirely from everyday commerce. Municipal treasuries across Germany filled the gap with locally authorized paper, and Gemeinde-Kasse issues like this one were produced in very limited quantities for purely local use — often a single print run, never replenished.
The official stamp serves as the sole authentication mechanism, which makes unstamped or faintly stamped examples functionally suspect. Neudorf was absorbed into the city of Kattowitz well before the Second World War, and surviving civic records from this period are fragmentary.
