Additional information

Cuba's sports-themed silver program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was tied directly to the country's Olympic ambitions and its need for hard currency. These pieces were struck for export sale, not domestic circulation — the Cuban peso was non-convertible, and coins like this one were sold through foreign dealers and state-run numismatic agencies to generate dollar revenue for Havana.

The Cuban women's volleyball team had dominated international competition through the 1990s, winning three consecutive Olympic golds from 1992 onward. This issue predates that run by two years.
