Obverse description The obverse displays the Mexican national arms in high relief against a mirror-polished field, depicting an eagle perched in left profile atop a prickly pear cactus, grasping and devouring a serpent in its beak and talon. The eagle's wings are spread upward and its plumage is rendered with fine detail characteristic of proof die work. A wreath of oak leaves to the left and laurel to the right frames the base of the cactus, tied at the bottom with a ribbon. The encircling legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper periphery in bold Latin capitals.
