The Príncipe de Asturias was a Spanish merchant vessel that sank in November 1916 off the coast of Brazil near Ilha da Queimada Grande, carrying an estimated 1,400 passengers and crew. Fewer than 150 survived. The wreck has drawn salvage interest for decades due to persistent — largely unverified — claims of substantial cargo aboard.
Cuba issued numerous silver collector pieces in the 2000s tied to shipwreck and maritime themes, largely aimed at the European numismatic market.
