The Banco del Río de La Plata was a Buenos Aires-based institution operating under Argentine provincial charter, yet this note is denominated in pesos plata boliviana — a unit tied to the Bolivian silver peso, which circulated widely in the Río de la Plata region during the mid-nineteenth century due to chronic shortages of Argentine-minted coin. The denomination itself reflects a commercial reality rather than a political one: merchants needed a trusted silver-referenced unit, and Bolivian coinage was simply what moved through the interior trade routes.

PS#1838 is scarce in any grade. The bank's note-issuing life was short, and surviving examples from the 1868 series rarely appear at auction.
