The Pirámide del Sol series was part of Mexico's broader push in the 1990s to compete in the international bullion market alongside established programs like the Libertad and the American Silver Eagle. The five-ounce format was never a strong seller, and mintages for the 1997–1998 issues were low enough that the series was quietly discontinued without a formal announcement.
Casa de Moneda de México is the oldest operating mint in the Americas, having struck coin continuously since 1535.
