Honduras in 1871 was still in the early, unstable years following Central American federation collapse, and its monetary infrastructure was correspondingly fragile. This copper pattern was produced to evaluate a proposed 10 Peso denomination that never entered regular production — the country's fiscal condition made large-denomination coinage impractical, and the project was shelved.
The smooth edge distinguishes it from any reeded trial strikes of the same type, suggesting multiple edge variants were tested simultaneously.
