This 1869 copper pattern was produced during the early years of the restored republic, shortly after Maximilian's execution and Juárez's return to Mexico City. The new government was actively reassessing its coinage system, and experimental strikes in non-standard metals were part of that process — copper patterns of denominations normally struck in gold were almost certainly produced to evaluate designs or to satisfy official approval requirements before committing to precious metal dies.
Pattern coinage from this period is poorly documented in Mexican mint records, and surviving copper strikes in this denomination are rare enough that individual specimens occasionally contradict each other in minor die details.
