| Obverse description | The Mexican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a Mexican golden eagle perched upon a prickly pear cactus growing from a rock in a lake, devouring a serpent in its beak and talons. The design is rendered in the stylized, deeply incused line-work characteristic of Mexican coinage of the period. Notably, this pattern piece bears no surrounding legend on the obverse, distinguishing it from standard circulation issues. Oak and laurel branches frame the base of the design. |

| Reverse description | A large, boldly rendered effigy of the head of Coyolxauhqui, the Aztec moon goddess, is depicted slightly to the right in high relief, adapted from the celebrated monolithic stone disc discovered at the Templo Mayor in Mexico City. The stylized face features closed eyes, distinctive circular cheek ornaments, a protruding tongue, and an elaborate headdress with scroll and bead motifs rendered in the pre-Columbian sculptural tradition. The denomination DIEZ PESOS appears in two lines below the effigy, followed by the date 1978. |
