Additional information

Cuba issued a substantial series of collector silver for the 1980 Moscow Games, leveraging hard-currency sales to Western numismatic markets at a time when the U.S. boycott had made the Olympics politically radioactive for most of the Americas. The irony is pointed: while the Carter administration pressured allied nations to stay home, Havana was profiting from the Games in dollars and deutschmarks through foreign coin dealers.

Struck in .999 fine silver rather than the more common .925 used by most Olympic commemorative programs of the period — a deliberate choice to maximize appeal to bullion-oriented buyers.
