Additional information

Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325 on a small island in Lake Texcoco, according to Aztec tradition guided by the omen of an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent. The Casa de Moneda de México — established in 1535 and the oldest operating mint in the Americas — has issued a long-running lunar series commemorating pre-Hispanic and Mexican historical subjects, of which this is one installment.

Mintage figures for individual pieces in this series vary considerably, and secondary market premiums frequently exceed face value by a substantial multiple given collector demand for the complete run.
