Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring the traditional escutcheon with a key between two rocky promontories, a rising sun, a royal palm, and a Phrygian cap atop a fasces, all surmounted by a wreath tied with a ribbon. The curved legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery, while the face value 10 PESOS is inscribed at the lower border. The design follows the classical heraldic tradition employed on Cuban coinage throughout the twentieth century.

Additional information

Cuba's hard-currency gold issues of the late 1980s were produced almost entirely for export — sold through state trading companies to generate foreign exchange the domestic economy desperately needed as Soviet subsidies began to falter. They circulated nowhere inside Cuba.
