Cuba's Olympic commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was partly a hard currency operation — the government issued these coins primarily for export sale to foreign collectors, generating convertible currency the domestic peso economy could not produce. The 1992 Barcelona Games series, of which this piece is a part, was struck well ahead of the Games themselves.
Cuba had been absent from the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics due to boycotts, making Barcelona the Cuban team's first appearance in eight years.
