Cuba's Seven Wonders of the Ancient World series was issued during the depths of the Special Period — the economic crisis that followed the Soviet collapse — when the Cuban government relied heavily on foreign-currency collectibles to generate hard cash it could not produce through ordinary trade. These coins were sold exclusively to international collectors, never circulating domestically.
The Hanging Gardens remain the only one of the Seven Wonders whose physical existence is disputed by modern archaeology. No confirmed site has ever been excavated.
