Cuba's commemorative silver program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was timed deliberately to build toward the quincentennial of Columbus's 1492 voyage, with this 1990 issue among the earlier releases in that sequence. The series was produced largely for the export collector market — hard currency Cuba needed badly under the U.S. embargo — rather than for domestic circulation, which explains the pristine survival rate.
