Additional information

Cuba's first domestic 1 Peso coin — issued under Batista in 1953 to mark the centennial of José Martí's birth — is commemorated here in a 1998 silver restrike series aimed squarely at the foreign collector market. The Banco Central issued numerous such pieces through the 1990s to generate hard currency, a strategy that accelerated sharply after the Soviet collapse devastated the Cuban economy in the early part of the decade.

The JMA reference places this firmly within the Juan M. Arbeláez collector classification system used for Cuban numismatica.
