Banco de Tamaulipas was one of the regional banks chartered under Mexico's 1897 Ley General de Instituciones de Crédito, which granted concessions to state-level banks with note-issuing privileges tied to gold or silver reserves held at the Banco de México's predecessor institutions. The American Bank Note Company produced notes for a significant number of these concession banks simultaneously, which accounts for the family resemblance across several northern Mexican provincial issues of the period.

The bank's operations were effectively ended by the revolutionary government's 1913–1916 liquidation of the entire concession banking system. Notes that circulated in Tamaulipas during the later years of this range were often accepted at heavy discounts as confidence in regional bank paper collapsed well before formal cancellation.
