The Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires was not a national institution — it was a provincial one, and in the fractured monetary environment of 1880s Argentina that distinction mattered enormously. The province of Buenos Aires had long resisted federalization, and its provincial bank continued issuing its own currency even after the national government had established competing instruments. This note exists precisely because of that tension.

ABNC's New York presses handled most of the series, with plate quality typical of their high-volume South American contracts of the period. PS#539 is among the earlier catalogued emissions under the reorganized provincial structure following the 1880 federalization of the city of Buenos Aires itself — a political rupture that forced the province to reconstitute both its capital and its banking apparatus almost simultaneously.
