This piece belongs to Mexico's long-running "Colección de monedas conmemorativas de los estados de la República Mexicana" series, which the Casa de Moneda launched in 2003 to work through all 31 states plus the Federal District. Chiapas, bordering Guatemala and historically among Mexico's most politically volatile states, had been the epicenter of the Zapatista uprising just twelve years prior — an armed rebellion that began on the very day NAFTA took effect, January 1, 1994.
Each state in the series received a single proof and a bullion release. KM#772 is the proof designation for the Chiapas issue specifically.
