Issued on the thirtieth anniversary of Ernesto Guevara's execution in Bolivia, this piece is one of several Cuban gold coins released in 1997 to coincide with commemorations held across Latin America that year. Cuba's state mint produced the series in relatively small quantities, aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation — hard currency was far too scarce in 1990s Cuba for gold coins to move through local hands.
