Issued as part of Cuba's extensive 1990s hard-currency commemorative program, this coin was sold almost exclusively through foreign exchange channels — never intended for domestic circulation on the island. The Cuban state used these silver issues as a vehicle for earning convertible currency during the Special Period, the acute economic crisis that followed the Soviet Union's collapse and the near-total loss of its subsidies to Havana.
