Additional information

Cuba's "African Presence in America" series, issued through the early 1990s, documented the demographic and cultural contributions of enslaved Africans to Caribbean society — a subject the revolutionary government had ideological reasons to elevate publicly. The 1992 issues came during the "Special Period in Time of Peace," the severe economic contraction following the Soviet collapse, when hard currency was desperately needed and commemorative silver exports became one of the few reliable revenue streams available to Havana.
