The Moncada Barracks assault of July 26, 1953 was a catastrophic military failure — over half of Castro's 160 attackers were killed or captured, and Castro himself was imprisoned. Its elevation into the founding myth of the Cuban Revolution was entirely retrospective, a political reframing that transformed a botched raid into a usable origin story. By 1993, the 40th anniversary fell during the "Special Period," Cuba's acute economic crisis following Soviet collapse, when the state was simultaneously issuing hard-currency collector silver while rationing basic food.
