Additional information

The Banco Central de la República Dominicana introduced bimetallic coinage in this denomination partly in response to chronic coin shortages and the monetary instability that followed the 2003 banking collapse, when three major private banks failed and the peso lost roughly two-thirds of its value against the dollar within a year. Durable, difficult-to-counterfeit bimetallic construction was a deliberate policy choice for higher-denomination circulating coins.

The long production window — over a decade with no major design revision — reflects stable reissue rather than commemorative intent.
