Banco Republicano was a short-lived Colombian regional bank operating under the country's era of free banking — the system established by the 1880 banking law that allowed private institutions to issue their own currency. By 1899, that system was already under serious pressure; the Thousand Days War broke out that same year, and the monetary chaos that followed effectively ended private bank note issuance in Colombia within a few years.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference places this firmly in the Specialized volume's Colombia section among provincial and private issues, many of which survive only in small quantities given the political upheaval that followed almost immediately after issue.
