Tivissa is a small municipality in the Ribera d'Ebre comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns, it issued its own emergency paper money during the Civil War when the Republic's central supply of small coinage collapsed almost immediately after July 1936. These local emissions — collectively catalogued under the term "billetes locales" — were authorized under a framework that gave municipalities and collectives extraordinary latitude to print what they needed.
At 10 pesetas, this is among the higher denominations typically seen in municipal issues of this scale, where most towns stuck to fractional values. Turró documents the Tivissa series sparsely, suggesting surviving population is low.
