Reverse description A naturalistically rendered and colourised Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is depicted in profile, clinging to the bark of a tree trunk at the centre of the coin. The bird's distinctive plumage is faithfully reproduced in applied colour, featuring bold black and white patterning on the wings and head, a vivid crimson undertail, and a greenish-yellow wash to the breast, after artwork by wildlife artist Mike Langman. The denomination TEN PENCE is inscribed along the upper arc of the legend, while GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER curves along the lower periphery.
