Part of the Royal Mint's 2018 A-Z circulation series — a 26-coin alphabet set released through general circulation and collector packs — the "X Marks the Spot" entry was assigned the letter X with a pirate treasure map theme, one of the more whimsical choices in a run that otherwise leaned toward British institutions and geography. The series marked the first time the Royal Mint had redesigned the 10 pence's reverse across a full circulating alphabet run, replacing the longstanding crowned lion that had appeared on the denomination since decimalisation in 1971.
