| Obverse description | Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth definitive portrait as sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicting the monarch wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the hair and crown. The circular legend reads ELIZABETH·II·D·G REG·F·D, with the date below and to the right of the truncation. The engraver's initials IRB appear beneath the portrait truncation. The field is plain and unadorned, concentrating full visual emphasis on the royal effigy. |

The Royal Shield reverse was part of a coordinated redesign across six denominations in 2008, with the individual shield segments collectively forming the complete Royal Arms when the coins are assembled — a concept by designer Matthew Dent that the Mint promoted heavily at launch. The non-magnetic copper-nickel composition was retained for only a brief window before steel blanks became standard practice, making this transitional phase relatively short-lived in production terms.
