Guernsey has long operated its own coinage independent of the UK Royal Mint, issuing through the States of Guernsey since the 19th century. The kingfisher series continues a broader British and Channel Islands tradition of using wildlife reverses on lower denominations that accelerated after decimalisation in 1971 displaced the older heraldic designs. Nickel plated steel replaced cupro-nickel in Guernsey's circulation coinage as rising metal costs made the older alloy economically impractical.
