Banco da China joined Banco Nacional Ultramarino and Banco Tai Fung as one of Macau's three note-issuing banks in 1995, a notably late entry into an unusual multi-issuer system that persists to this day. This lunar new year commemorative is one of a recurring series issued by all three banks in coordination with the SAR government — the Year of the Pig cycle falls every twelve years, making the 2019 issue the second of its kind from the post-handover period.
