Bradbury Wilkinson produced this series for Banco Nacional Ultramarino at a moment when Portuguese colonial banking was under quiet but mounting pressure — Macau's status as a trading enclave made currency stability a diplomatic as much as a financial concern, and the BNU held the note-issuing monopoly for the territory continuously from 1902. The 1963 date falls squarely within the final period of relatively undisturbed colonial administration before regional geopolitics began to complicate matters seriously.
Two signature combinations are documented for Pick 50, suggesting either sequential administrative appointments or parallel authorization arrangements — Francisco José Vieira Machado appears on both pairings, indicating his tenure bridged whatever transition occurred between the two signing configurations.
