The Banco Nacional Ultramarino was the sole note-issuing authority for Portuguese colonial territories, and this 1910 Macau issue came at a politically volatile moment — the Portuguese monarchy fell in October of that year, replaced by the First Republic. Notes already printed and in circulation carried no reference to the new regime, creating an awkward transitional overlap that was simply tolerated rather than resolved.
Bradbury, Wilkinson printed for numerous colonial issuers of the period and the quality of their intaglio work was well above what the territory's modest circulation volumes would typically have justified.
